Meet our 2010 Volunteer Leadership Team & Day of Coordinators:
NAME: Don Bartel
Volunteer Role/s: Run Coordinator
Number of years with Suburban RUSH: 6 years
Motivation for being involved: I want to give back to the sport that has been so good to me. And I want to bring more new racers into the sport, hoping that many will eventually compete in the longer races as well.
Favourite Suburban RUSH memory: Riding Dean, Course Director and Jordy, 2009’s Bike Coordinator, in the snow to scout the course a couple of months before a race. It was hard riding in the snow but was so much fun!
NAME: Erin Creak
Volunteer Role/s: Registration Manager
Number of years with Suburban RUSH: 5 years
Motivation for being involved: I don't mountain bike ride, so this is my only opportunity to be involved in adventure racing. It's also an extremely organized event which means that volunteering is a breeze.
NAME: Sarah Meridith Goring
Volunteer Role/s: Racer, Bike Coordinator & Timing Manager
Number of years with Suburban RUSH: 6 years
Motivation for being involved: Because I like Shawn and Dean, and also I like there to be cheap local races. So I help out.
Favourite Suburban RUSH memory: Rain, tricycles, sun, beer, netting, timing, late-night course flagging, early-morning pre-riding, bbqs, beer, package stuffing, nice volunteers, happy racers. I've run out but there's more.
NAME: Laddie Hannan
Volunteer Role/s: Run Coordinator / Course Sweep Coordinator
Number of years with Suburban RUSH: 5 years
Motivation for being involved: It is always a tremendous honour being involved with Suburban Rush as a volunteer and supporting such a massive effort put forth by the founders of the awesome Suburban Rush Adventure Race along with all of the volunteers on race day. I am truly motivated to ensure a great race experience for all
Favourite Suburban RUSH memory: Watching the satisfaction of all competitors completing the course and pushing for their personal best on race day, regardless of what race day may deliver. Also, running through knee deep water with torrential rainfall and dodging puddles while scouting a new run course route in honour of the course director a few years ago!
NAME: Vanessa Labossiere
Volunteer Role/s: Refreshment Coordinator & Volunteer Registration Assistant
Number of years with Suburban RUSH: 6 years
Motivation for being involved: To support my friends directing the race & to cheer on my husband & racing friends.
Favourite Suburban RUSH memory: The rubbery legged finish line challenges think army net & mini-tricycle riding.
NAME: Stephanie Masterman
Volunteer Role/s: Racer, Data Entry Clerk & Checkpoint Coordinator
Number of years with Suburban RUSH: 6 years
Motivation for being involved: To see all the excitement and enthusiasm on the racers' faces during the race, to spend a day outside with good friends and to motivate myself to get back into adventure racing!
Favourite Suburban RUSH memory: Racing in 2008 after having a baby - I definitely wasn't my fittest and because of this it was my biggest accomplishment in my adventure racing history - I really had to push myself to finish in a respectable time (after falling to dead last in the run portion) and felt proud to cross the finish line middle of the pack. **Note: Stephanie has completed over 10 adventure racers including a 36 hour race**
NAME: Tanya McCarthy
Volunteer Role/s: Checkpoint Coordinator (2005) & Volunteer Manager (2006-present)
Number of years with Suburban RUSH: 6 years.
Motivation for being involved: I can't say no to Dean and it's a lot of fun!
Favourite Suburban RUSH memory: At the inaugural Suburban Rush, my husband Duncan was warning people of a bear that showed up near the checkpoint station. Many racers misunderstood his Australian accent and were
looking for beers.
NAME: Celia Quigley
Volunteer Role/s: Checkpoint Coordinator
Number of years with Suburban RUSH: 6 years
Motivation for being involved: All my friends seem to be adventure racers and, since I don't mountain bike, volunteering is a great way to share the experience with my friends.
Favourite Suburban RUSH memory: Strangely enough, it is directing racers at a checkpoint... in the pouring rain... on crutches... with my casted foot wrapped in Saran Wrap to try to keep it dry! The racers' energy & enthusiasm was so infectious that I was able to totally forget that I was broken.
NAME: Cory Shaw
Volunteer Role/s: DJ
Number of years with Suburban RUSH: 6 years
Motivation for being involved: Fun, sun, family and music!
Favourite Suburban RUSH memory: In year one, I was a bit nervous and a bit sloppy to start, but the crowds got bigger, the sun shone brighter, and the music flowed effortlessly through the grooving and swaying masses...music is power
NAME: Janet Shaw
Volunteer Role/s: Refreshment Coordinator & Recycling Coordinator
Number of years with Suburban RUSH: 6 years
Motivation for being involved: My motivational brother, Dean
Favourite Suburban RUSH memory: Watching all the racers smile as they come over the finish line. The most memorable is the women that was last to cross the finish line. She toughed her way through the course over 6 hours and still had a smile and that proud look of achievement on her face. I will never forget as she hugged her partner.
